Placental malaria: a preventable malady
Pregnant women are more prone to becoming infected with malaria than other adults. In their case, the parasite tends to hide in the placenta, unnoticed but damaging to the host and her unborn child. An EU-funded project has set out to improve the antenatal care as well as the malaria diagnosis and treatment available to expectant mothers in endemic areas.The Cosmic project aims to advance the fight against pregnancy-associated malaria (PAM). Clinics in endemic areas do offer the recommended antenatal care, says project coordinator Henk Schallig of the Royal Tropical Institute in the Netherlands, but expectant mothers don’t necessarily seek it out — for example, because they live too far away.

The European Youth Event takes place on 1 and 2 June 2018 in the European Parliament's seat in Strasbourg.
It is a unique opportunity for young Europeans to make their voices heard.
During the event, they will:
Come up with ideas for the future of Europe,
Discuss with European decision makers,
Join more than 8,000 young people from all over Europe.
Follow-up to the event:
July 2018: a report featuring the most concrete ideas discussed during the event will be distributed to all Members of the European Parliament (MEPs),
Autumn 2018: some participants will present the most developed ideas from the report to a number of parliamentary committees and get feedback from MEPs.

In 2017, the employment rate of people aged 20 to 64 in the European Union (EU) stood at 72.2%, up compared with 2016 (71.1%). The Europe 2020 strategy target is to reach a total employment rate for people aged 20 to 64 of at least 75% in the EU by 2020. This objective has been translated into different national targets in order to reflect the situation and possibilities of each Member State to contribute to the common goal.

Western Greece

Unique innovation to decarbonise shipping by H2020 project
One of the world's most environmentally friendly passenger ships is harnessing the wind for propulsion, cutting CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, thanks to the installation of an innovative rotor sail developed by an EU-funded project.
The cruise ferry M/S Viking Grace, operated by Åland-based shipping company Viking Line, made its first voyage equipped with the rotor sail in April 2018, travelling between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden – a route on which the wind-propulsion system is set to slash the ferry’s carbon emissions by up to 900 metric tonnes per year.

As part of the European Commission's flagship programme Emergency Support to Integration & Accommodation, the UN Refugee Agency, is implementing a cash card assistance programme in Greece to help all refugees and asylum seekers cover their basic needs.Through this initiative, refugees and asylum seekers receive pre-defined monthly cash allocations through a dedicated debit card. This enables them to meet their basic needs with dignity and freedom of choice, while supporting the local economy.
