Slovakia: Commission initiative helps a low-income region catch up. North-East Slovakia regio of Prešov's GDP is rapidly growing but remains well under the EU and Slovak average. Africa's biggest displacement crisis

Thousands of people have been killed in Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) Kasai region since 2016, according to UN estimates. Conflict has caused the internal displacement of more than a million people the peak of the crisis, according to OCHA figures. DRC is Africa's biggest displacement crisis. The EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) has financed various projects through its implementing partners. It focuses on rapid response to population movements, protection and life-saving assistance.

Bioplastics offer a real alternative to the plastics produced by the petrochemical sector

How do you replace plastics made from petrochemicals with environmentally friendly material? Vegeplast, a company based in the south of #France, specialises in biodegradable products made from cereals. Vegeplast produces biodegradable items from agricultural material. With support from Europe, it developed two products which are widely used, every day, all around the world: food packaging trays (Vegepack) and coffee capsules which are compatible with Nespresso machines. These bioplastics offer a real alternative to the plastics produced by the petrochemical sector.

The EU costs citizens less than half a cup of coffee daily — and as little as a tenth of a cup — in most of the 28 member countries.

Plastic

Traditionally, bulky municipal plastic waste not selectively collected in Belgium’s Walloon Region was incinerated. Today, the Technopoly Recyclage project is demonstrating the feasibility of recycling this waste stream and converting it to secondary raw materials. Plastic waste volumes are increasing and plastic recycling has become a major challenge. The Technopoly Recyclage project worked towards the valorisation of municipal plastic waste in order to minimise disposal at the landfill. Shredded plastic is ground into small pellets, which can then be melted and moulded into new objects, such as storage boxes, buckets, pallets, plastic toys and tools.
