Designing an interconnected energy sector for a climate-neutral future

The EU strategy for Energy System Integration will help build modern infrastructure, make European industry more sustainable and competitive, and provide clean energy for citizens.

EU support will bring clean energy to thousands of households in Spain and Austria

Renewable energies are crucial to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050.

Free test runs in electric cars in Austria

Motorists can test an electric car free of charge in the Austrian state of Burgenland. This is part of the Interreg AT-HU project SMART Pannonia which is aiming to encourage more people to switch to e-cars.

RESponsible island prize competition

This prize aims to award islands with innovative and sustainable local renewable energy production for use in electricity, heating, cooling and transport. Cash prize of €500,000, €250,000 and €100,000, for the 3 winners respectively.

Supporting key energy cross-border infrastructure projects

The Connecting Europe Facility supports the implementation of key infrastructure projects of common interest in electricity, gas, smart grids and cross-border carbon dioxide networks.

In 2019, CO2 emissions from energy use in the EU estimated to have decreased

Eurostat estimates that in 2019, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion significantly decreased by 4.3% in the EU, compared with the previous year.

In focus: Energy security in the EU

Securing energy supply is vital. It ensures our homes are heated – or air-conditioned – that we can phone, use lights and computers and that our hospitals, public transport and other essential services, like water distribution, function.

In focus: Energy efficiency in buildings

Collectively, buildings in the EU are responsible for 40% of our energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions, which mainly stem from construction, usage, renovation and demolition.

Electric bikes and silent trucks to green goods deliveries

Across Europe’s cities, the demand for delivery services is increasing. But these deliveries affect urban life as they add to traffic congestion, noise and pollution and many cities are now trying out alternative modes of transport that could help.

Making the link between energy efficiency and property values

Property valuation professionals can more confidently account for buildings’ energy efficiency ratings, thanks to the Horizon 2020 project REVALUE. The project analysed the valuations of 120,000 dwellings owned by housing associations in the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and Germany.

Women in energy!

The EU Sustainable Energy Week - the biggest event dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe – is looking to recognise women who are contributing to a climate-neutral Europe by 2050.

Want to go for an electric car but worried about its range?

Despite the well-documented benefits of e-vehicles, they haven’t really taken off; in part because of their solid-state battery limitations.

European Commission and European Investment Fund launch €75 million BlueInvest Fund

We need to look at our oceans to find solutions for renewable energy, sustainable seafood, blue biotechnology, maritime IT and much more.

Covenant of Mayors Investment Forum

Organised by DG ENER, DG CLIMA and EASME, the conference brings together cities, industry and financial institutions. Register now for the 2020 edition!

The paints that eat pollutants and heat homes

In Europe, half of cities' annual energy consumption goes to heating and cooling. Despite the EU’s move towards decarbonisation, 75% of heating and cooling comes from fossil fuels, whilst only 19% is generated from renewable energy. EU-funded researchers have now developed a thermo-regulating paint that can absorb and release heat inside brick buildings, keeping rooms warm whenever necessary by using excess energy.
