EUR 2.3 billion of EU funding was invested in the Eastern Poland regions (Lubelskie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie, Świętokrzyskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) between 2007 and 2013. The programme has directly benefited the citizens whose quality of life has substantially improved thanks to the EU investments.
Tuberculosis (TB) kills globally more people than any other infectious disease. In 2016, an estimated 10.4 million people developed TB and 1.7 million people died as a result. Up to one third of the world's population is latently infected with the infectious agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB is also responsible for a quarter of all the world's multi-drug resistant infections.
Research and innovation projects supported by the European Union through Horizon 2020 and previous framework programmes are having a real impact on the life of Europe's citizens and our society as a whole. On 1 February 2018, the European Commission adopted a proposal for the revision of the Drinking Water Directive. This proposal, in reaction to the Right2Water European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), foresees, among other important elements, an obligation for Member States to improve access to water and ensure its access for vulnerable and marginalized groups. The Right2Water initiative was one of the first European Citizens’ Initiatives launched in 2012, just after the ECI instrument was introduced on 1 April 2012 by the Treaty of Lisbon.

Talk-show debate "Cohesion policy - 30 years of success, past and future". As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Cohesion policy in 2018, a talk-show debate looked at what the policy has achieved over the past three decades, as it was at the heart of each milestone in EU's history, from the creation of the Single Market to the successive enlargements.

We’ll speak with Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, about the importance of a clean, healthy ocean and how we can help to reduce marine litter. For its part, the EU has been a major funder of projects and initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion, boosting knowledge and improving the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families.

The European Commission wishes to promote free Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens and visitors in public spaces such as parks, squares, public building, libraries, health centres, and museums everywhere in Europe through WiFi4EU.

In 2015, the highest proportion (85 %) of city-dwellers who were satisfied with their personal job situation was recorded in Graz (the second largest city in Austria), while relatively high degrees of satisfaction were also recorded in the Austrian capital of Wien (79 %), the Danish capital of København (78 %), the western French city of Rennes (also 78 %) and the Belgian capital of Bruxelles/Brussel (77 %). By contrast, the lowest level of satisfaction (44 %) was recorded in the heavily industrialised city of Miskolc (north-east Hungary), while the Greek capital of Greater Athina (45 %) and the Hungarian capital of Budapest (49 %), along with Piatra Neamț (eastern Romania; also 49 %) were the only other cities where less than half the population declared they were satisfied with their personal job situation.

Every year, Europeans generate 25 million tonnes of plastic waste, but less than 30% is collected for recycling. Across the world, plastics make up 85% of beach litter. And plastics are even reaching citizens’ lungs and dinner tables, with microplastics in air, water and food having an unknown impact on their health.This is the reason why the European Commission adopted the first-ever Europe-wide strategy on plastics which is part of the transition towards a more circular economy. The strategy will protect the environment from plastic pollution whilst fostering growth and innovation, turning a challenge into a positive agenda for the Future of Europe.
In 2018, the Commission will make comprehensive proposals for the next generation of financial programmes for the post-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework, which is the EU's long–term budget. The Commission's proposals will be designed to make it possible for the EU to deliver on the things that matter most, in areas where it can achieve more than Member States acting alone. This requires a careful assessment both of what has worked well in the past and what could be improved in the future. This consultation is an integral part of the process and its objective is to collect the views of all interested parties on how to make the most of every euro of the EU budget.
The European Commission launched the 5th edition of the EU Prize for Women Innovators last September. The award recognises European women entrepreneurs who have achieved outstanding innovations and brought them to market.Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, said: "The EU Prize for Women Innovators gives public recognition to outstanding women entrepreneurs and inspires other women to follow in their footsteps".
"Education is not only about what we learn in the classroom, but what we discover about the cultures and traditions of our fellow Europeans." The free Interrail pass offers young people, regardless of social or educational background and including people with reduced mobility, a chance to travel abroad.
